Open Letter to Kari

I have a four year old daughter and her name is Kari. Below is a letter I wrote for her at a time when my heart was full of inspiration.

To my little sweetheart, Kari:

You've been saying "Mommy I'm almost four!" and beaming proudly of how big a girl you've become. Today, you are officially four. And I can't help but think about how far we've come. And while time is flying by, there are days where I can't wait for you to have more independence and be more self sufficient. It's those days like today that I wish I could just freeze time and really soak in all that you are in this moment.

You see, just as you are learning, I am too. This is your first time to be a kid, just as much as my first time to be a mom. You are making mistakes, I am too. But we are all in this together, figuring it out one moment at a time. But no matter what, there are few things I want you to never forget, even at four years old.

You are beautiful

You are the most incredible little girl I know and I am sure you will grow into a beautiful, charming woman - inside and out. While I enjoy dressing you up with fancy dresses, painting colors on your nails, styling your hair - always remember, your beauty is so much more than what eyes can see. You have a heart full of compassion and thoughtfulness. At your age, you can easily talk to strangers and give them compliments bringing up the heartwarming 'ahhh' and smile from these people you don't personally know. Your happiness is contagious. And it melt my heart when I heard you say I love you Mommy, unprompted, unexpected. You are sweet, talented, vibrant - and no physical beauty can equate that.

Don't let anyone dim your light

You are wonderfully made by God. You have a great singing voice! No matter what others say, don't let them undermine you. Never let anyone tell you you aren't good enough, smart enough, pretty enough. You are meant to shine, just as everyone does. You are created for purpose. Your playing small does not serve the world. Dream big little one. Use the gift you have given to change the world. Let you be an inspiration to others. Be kind, always and give back.

Don't forget home

Life is full of uncertainties and struggles. When you find one, never ever forget that you can always run back home. No matter how old you are. Grow into a beautiful, strong, independent person that you are but don't forget that here with me, you are home.

You are always be my baby, my love for you is from the bottom-est pit of my heart

I existed the moment I heard your heartbeat and felt your kick. From then until eternity, you will always be my baby. I love you and nothing can destroy or take that love away. So today and every day of your life, remember that I love you more than words can ever say. Keep being you, keep being happy and keep living and loving life every day.

Love,
Mommy
